Otome visual novel Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ first launched in Japan for PS Vita in early 2014 and re-released (again, in Japan) for Nintendo Switch in 2023. Today, Eastasiasoft announced it will publish the game for Nintendo Switch with English language support in the West. This standalone game is a modern take on the Edo period romance of the main series, casting characters as high school students in modern-day Japan. It is expected to launch late this year.

Our heroine, Chizuru, and the handsome warriors of the Shinsengumi are now students and teachers living in modern Japan. The slice-of-life story follows their antics while they hold a school festival, stress over midterms, and get into watergun fights.

According to Eastasiasoft, the key features of Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ are:

  • Take the role of Chizuru as she’s surrounded by familiar faces in a new modern setting!
  • Engage in fun mini-games with the handsome warriors of the Shinsengumi.
  • Make key choices and discover unique endings with each possible love interest!
  • Enjoy voiceovers in Japanese and newly localized text in English.
  • Navigate scenarios with ease using a variety of UI controls and preferences!

There are 2000 physical Limited Editions of the game, to be sold through Play-Asia with pre-orders beginning April 10 at 11:00 p.m. Hong Kong time. It comes in a collector’s box that includes the game, a manual, a soundtrack on CD, an art book, a mini case, a Joy-Con sticker set, acrylic character standees, and a numbered certificate.

Developed by Idea Factory/Design Factory and published by Eastasiasoft, Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ will be released in the West for Nintendo Switch in late 2025.
