Assassin’s Creed Shadows has had a stronger start than many gamers expected, with 3 million players reached and 40 million hours played. However, the RPG appears to fail in convincing them to play for long, as new Steam and PlayStation 5 achievement data reveal.

More than half the Steam players have not even finished the game’s first act so far, with only 40.8% of players owning the ‘A New League Rises’ achievement for completing it. The figure drops even lower for PlayStation 5 players, as only 36.9% finished the first act.

To put things into perspective, the first act only takes 2-3 hours if you play at a decent pace and contains most of the tutorials and story setup.

Why it matters: These striking achievement statistics reveal that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has failed to keep gamers interested for more than the first 15 to 20 hours, as very few completed the game’s second act.

Surprisingly, this figure drops strikingly low for the second act of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with only 2.6% of Steam players finishing it and gaining the ‘An Oath Fulfilled’ achievement in return. On the flip side, 5.9% of PlayStation 5 players completed the second act.

Yasuke becomes playable, and things start to open up in the second act, with most players concluding it in 10 to 15 hours. Such a huge drop-off around 15 hours suggests players could not bear the modern Assassin’s Creed formula again or disliked Yasuke.

Although 88% of Assassin’s Creed Shadows players finished the prologue, suggesting that most gamers might have just checked out the experience for the first 5 to 10 hours and then stopped playing later.

On a similar note, Japanese players reviewed Assassin’s Creed Shadows poorly, while some global users criticized it for not clearly revealing interesting game mechanics.

Has Assassin’s Creed Shadows failed to retain most of its players after the game’s second act, or are these statistics not enough to paint a clear picture? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
