Read Time:2 Minute, 59 Second
We first shared the news of the LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi (set number 71438) back in July last year however it only released last October. And yes, it has taken me a while to get through my backlog to be able to bring you this review. That’s not even due to the fact that the LEGO Art LOVE (set number 31214) skipped right to the front.
Mario time!
Before I get into the nitty gritty of this build, let’s quickly go over the product specs/details. The LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi is an 18+ set, not necessarily because of the build techniques but due io it not being a playset. This is definitely a collection piece. Although the £115 price tag may also be giveaway for this! Released in October the set is available on the LEGO website now and is even eligible for a special Mario Kart themed GWP (Gift With Purchase) to celebrate MAR10 Day. However, this is only whilst stocks last and ends on the 11th of March.
As for the specifications, the set itself is 1,215 pieces. Which builds to a decent size with a height of 40cm (15.5in), width of 26cm (10in) and depth of 11cm (4in). This does mean this is not a set for your Ikea Kallax unit!
Let’s-a go!
I want to do things a little differently with this review. I could go over every single detail of this set. But lets face it, if you’re reading this then you probably already know all about how you can turn the handle at the base to see Yoshi run with Mario on his back. Or how you can turn the dial hidden behind Yoshi’s head to make his tongue move in and out. You most likely know all about the interactive Action Tag to use with your digital Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach figures too. So I won’t mention any of that.

Final Thoughts
This is genuinely one of my favourite builds, and that comes from someone who hates technical/mechanical sets. Ok, hate is a strong word, but there is nothing that infuriates me more than LEGO Technic and mechanical builds. It might be my long acrylic nails or the need for a bit extra brain power. Either way I can’t get on with them. When I saw this set had technic/mechanic elements I did panic a bit. But actually they were really straight forward to navigate and not too fiddly. So if that’s putting you off, take this as reassurance, if I can do it, you definitely can!
Overall I loved seeing the pixel art of these beloved characters coming together. From bag 4 onwards it was pure Mario and Yoshi joy. Plus it looks fantastic next to my other LEGO Mario themed sets. The moving elements are an added bonus for me, but as an 18+ set this is a great collection piece.
If you’re on the fence about this set and you’re a Super Mario fan, I highly recommend heading to your local Mushroom Kingdom LEGO store and buying the LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set.
