Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
This week’s Waifu is Nanami Madobe, the OS-tan mascot for Windows 7!
For those who don’t know, OS-tan characters are anime girl mascots for operating systems. While Nanami Madobe isn’t exactly the first, she was able to popularize the concept and achieved some notoriety even outside her native Japan.
As part of a special sale, the first 7777 copies of Windows 7 Ultimate in Japan also received a special wallpaper and even a system sound pack featuring voicelines from Nana Mizuki. Mizuki is known for her roles as Hinata Hyuuga in Naruto, Cheelai in Dragon Ball Super and more recently voiced the witch Viola in Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou.
Despite appearing in ad campaigns and products, OS-tans the officiality of some OS-tans are vague.
The big appeal of Nanami Madobe is that since she’s the personification of Windows 7 and the fact that she has a system sound pack, it’s like your gaming rig can actually be your waifu. There’s something to be said for immersion.
Feel free to share who your waifu is on our Twitter or Facebook and who knows, we might feature them in a regular Waifu Wednesday post!
