Your gear in Monster Hunter Wilds not only gives you base stats but also gives you unique skills to utilize in combat. Just about every skill has an activation requirement, and sometimes they can be a bit more vague than others, such as Latent Power.
Other skills like Heroics may have a clear prerequisite to activate, but the different levels may not be as clear. Here’s exactly how the Heroics skill works along with the differences at every level.

How Does Heroics Work In Monster Hunter Wilds
Heroics activates whenever your health drops below 35%, meaning you’ll need to get hit just a few times by a monster. Once active, this skill will stay in effect until your health goes above the 35% threshold. On your health bar, there will be a small line indicating the 35% margin, and it will appear like a very thin number 4. You’ll get a notification telling you the skill is active, along with the corresponding buffs in the top left corner of the screen based on the level of the skill.
As long as you don’t heal yourself, this skill will stay active for as long as needed, but the only wildcard is your Palico. Randomly during combat when your health is low, your loyal Palico will come to the rescue and heal you in a way that can’t be dodged or canceled. Whenever this happens, simply let yourself get hit again to reactivate the skill.

Every Level Of Heroics In Monster Hunter Wilds
There are five levels of Heroics in total, determined by the number of gear pieces you have equipped at a time.
Skill Level |
Effects |
---|---|
Level 1 |
+50 Defense |
Level 2 |
+5% Attack and +50 Defense |
Level 3 |
+5% Attack and +100 Defense |
Level 4 |
+10% Attack and +100 Defense |
Level 5 |
+30% Attack and no defensive buffs |
Level 5 makes you a low-health glass canon, as the defense buffs from previous levels aren’t further boosted and no longer exist at all. If defense is important to you, you can keep yourself at level 4, but level 5 offers a huge boost to attack if you’re willing to live dangerously. During a Hunt, you can be knocked out two times and respawn, with a third knockout failing the hunt. This means you can choose to play dangerously during the first two lives and fight with level 5 Heroics to greatly boost your attack before later worrying about defense and staying alive.
