With the rate at which AAA developers are canceling video game projects, we might all need to content ourselves with our backlogs in future. Respawn Entertainment, a subsidiary of EA and the developers of Titanfall and Apex Legends, has canceled its unannounced “multiplayer first-person shooter experience”.
The news comes to us via a since-deleted post on LinkedIn (thanks, Dexerto), in which Emilee Evans, former Executive Assistant and Production Coordinator at Respawn, revealed: “The unannounced incubation project I was a part of for the past year was canceled this week.”
It’s another unfortunate blow for fans of the developer. While Apex Legends remains an ongoing way to experience the studio’s signature style of FPS gameplay, it doesn’t seem like we will be seeing anything new from the studio for some time. Almost a year ago to the day, EA laid off over 700 employees, a move which similarly resulted in the cancellation of that cool-sounding Mandalorian game, a single-player shooter set in the Star Wars universe.
What do you think, are we going to see a return to the bad old days, when a major video game each month was something of a rarity? Or, is that precisely what the industry needs, giving it time to heal? Let us know in the comments section below.
