In December, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny essentially confirmed the PS6 when he revealed Sony would be partnering with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on Project Amethyst. This initiative will see the two tech companies collaborate to achieve various mutually beneficial outcomes involving machine learning.
Today is apparently Radeon Day, a holiday celebrated by our PC betters. It marks the launch of AMD’s futuristic Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 graphics cards. In celebration, AMD took the opportunity to hype up Project Amethyst and provide an update on its fancy new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 tech (FSR 4), which these new cards will be capable of supporting.
FSR technology has been something of a revolution in the video game space. It allows games to be rendered at a lower resolution (to our limited technical understanding) and then uses an upscaling algorithm to enlarge each frame to your TV/monitor’s native resolution, boosting performance quite considerably. FSR 4 specifically uses AI to achieve even more robust technical gains, maintaining a higher level of image quality than was previously possible.
Apparently, the collaboration with Sony has been going swimmingly. AMD proudly proclaimed that: “FSR 4 is looking fantastic! Excited for the co-development with Sony Interactive Entertainment on the models used for the FSR 4 upscaler. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for what’s next!”
Does it seem too soon, still, to even contemplate the PS6? Have you embraced our seemingly inevitable AI upscaling future? Prepare for tomorrow in the comments section below.
