First debuted in Japan late last month around the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, the PS5 console rental service Sony is offering has now expanded to the UK. On the PlayStation Direct website, you can now choose to lease a PS5, PS5 Pro, and a range of PS5 accessories via third-party firm Raylo. You can choose anywhere between a monthly rolling plan or commit up to a three-year lease, with the price decreasing the longer you pledge.
On offer for rental is a base PS5, PS5 Pro, the PS Portal, PSVR2, and the PS5 DualSense Edge pad. The pricing looks like this:
Console / Device | Monthly | 12 Months | 24 Months | 36 Months |
---|---|---|---|---|
Base PS5 (w/ disc drive) | £23.59 / mo | £17.99 / mo | £12.95 / mo | £11.99 / mo |
PS5 Pro | £35.59 / mo | £26.99 / mo | £20.99 / mo | £18.95 / mo |
PS Portal | £13.99 / mo | £10.49 / mo | £6.95 / mo | £6.49 / mo |
PSVR2 | £51.49 / mo | £37.99 / mo | £22.99 / mo | £18.49 / mo |
PS5 DualSense Edge | £20.59 / mo | £14.99 / mo | £8.99 / mo | £7.49 / mo |
Of course, given the fact you’re renting products from a company rather than outright buying them, the process comes with lengthy terms and conditions and legalities. It’s recommended you have a good browse of the website before you commit to anything.
“With Flex, you can lease a PlayStation 5 with no upfront cost on a super-flexible, monthly rolling plan that you can cancel anytime,” is how the rental service is pitched. “Choose a 12, 24, or 36-month term to enjoy even lower monthly payments. Upgrade to the latest PS5 console – and cutting-edge accessories like the PS VR2 – with just a few clicks.”
Some of the most important details to highlight are you don’t own the device should you choose to rent anything, you are allowed some degree of wear and tear to the product but charges for repair may come into effect past a certain mark, and you won’t get to keep the hardware at the end of the rental like a mobile phone contract.
The options presented on the website are:
- Keep hold of the device and continue paying monthly until you decide to return the device. Additional payments don’t contribute towards ownership.
- Cancel your lease and return your device to Raylo. If you’re unable to return your device you’ll need to pay a non-return fee.
