There’s always a risk attached to being involved in the Xbox Insider program, as you’re ultimately getting updates before they’re released to the public, but normally everything goes pretty smoothly aside from minor issues here and there.
Unfortunately that’s not the case today, as members of the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings have been finding that their Xbox consoles have been essentially reset to factory settings (or the update just hasn’t been going through at all).
The program’s dedicated Reddit page has been inundated with comments from Xbox users all with the same problem, with people mentioning that they’ve basically had to go through the initial setup process with their profiles again.
Xenokaiii on Reddit: Came home to my Xbox today after work and found my console had factory reset itself after it automatically downloaded update 2504.250227-2200. Biggest bug I’ve ever seen release in all my years of being in the preview program!
vybiin on Reddit: Have they spoke on this issue? Its already been mentioned in here but Xbox is pretty much unplayable online for those having the issue. Factory Resets & Forced Updates..
The one saving grace here is that even though it’s essentially a factory reset, nobody seems to be losing their games and apps when it happens, so instead it’s just a case of adjusting things like settings and backgrounds again.
It’s definitely annoying though, and obviously Microsoft will be working tirelessly at the moment to try and pull the update and figure out what’s wrong. We’ll let you know when there’s an official response – hopefully pretty soon!
For those who aren’t in the Xbox Insider program, we haven’t seen anything suggesting you’ll be faced with this bug, and (fingers crossed) that should remain the case. Again, we’ll keep you in the loop when Microsoft provides a comment.
