FragPunk, the latest online multiplayer shooter from Chinese publisher NetEase, has been indefinitely delayed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S just 24 hours before it was scheduled to release. While the PC version will still launch as planned on Thursday, 6th March 2025, the console editions will be held back because of “unexpected technical challenges in optimization and adaptation” encountered during the testing process.
A new release date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players wasn’t shared, but developer Bad Guitar Studio states it would rather delay the console versions than risk “providing a potentially poor user experience”. Pre-orders on the PS Store will be cancelled and refunds issued.
As an apology, anyone who pre-ordered the game will receive $10 of in-game currency once FragPunk does actually launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Then, as a makegood for all console players, the items the developer releases in the PC version between the start of Season 1 and whenever the console version launches will all be there for free immediately. Pre-order bonuses will also be made available in some way.
“We know this isn’t the news you were hoping for, and we deeply appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued excitement for the game,” the statement concludes. Our team is working closely with both the Xbox and PlayStation teams to get FragPunk into your hands as soon as possible, and we will keep you updated every step of the way.
This marks another setback for the development teams housed underneath NetEase, a publisher that’s reportedly looking to scale back its video game production efforts. Marvel Rivals recently lost a support studio in the USA, and Japanese creators like Yakuza maker Toshihiro Nagoshi may not get much of a marketing budget when it comes to releasing their projects.
